Today, I visited the recently opened permanent space of de Appel Arts Centre (Prins Hendrikkade 142) for the exhibition Topsy Turvy, Long live the upside-down world! My favorite was this piece by Dutch artist Allard van Horn (1968) called Skies over Snaefell (2012), an ”imaginary travel machine and as a dynamic portrait of Snaefell mountain [a glacier/volcano in Iceland].” In this mixed media installation of 5x9m of 2,500 LED lights, a computer software continuously searches for new images made of the skies about Snaefell which are uploaded online by tourists, scientists and admirers. These images are then converted into a constellation of pixels of light.
